If you think Austin brakes lack bite....
Posted by: Tony Griffiths - 24-04-2021, 12:11 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (5)

Getting into the head of motor vehicle designers circa 1914 -1920, most appeared to think that good brakes were dangerous. Here's a crazy example - a 1000 cc V-twin Sparkbrook. I had one of those, but with a 296 cc Villers engine, a bike so light I could lift it off the ground. The brakes - cycle blocks on the front and a dummy rim on the rear - were utterly useless.
With a 1000cc V-twin engine, pregnant wife on the pillion and two hearty children in the originally-fitted sidecar - how on earth was this monster ever brought to a halt, especially (as the second picture hints) in the wet?

  Oil button spring...
Posted by: Ruairidh Dunford - 24-04-2021, 07:13 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (3)

The oil button on my Cup sticks out too far, i.e. it is not flush even when the engine is off.

Has anyone had success with resetting the spring and, if so, what did you do?

Failing that, does anyone have one I could buy please?

sealing the oil pump bottom plate
Posted by: jamesheath - 23-04-2021, 07:33 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (2)

Hi All,
Hopefully an easy one - should there be anything at all sealing the bottom plate of the oil pump?
I don't think there's a paper gasket, but a wipe of Blue Hylomar? (I don't want to get any on the vanes....)

  Timing Valves without Timing Marks
Posted by: Jamie - 23-04-2021, 07:27 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (19)

I have fitted the crankshaft and the camshaft to my engine and should like to set the timing of the two before I fit the pistons and the block, if possible. However, there are no timing marks on the camshaft pulley, although there is a dot on the crankshaft pulley.

Is there a way to set the valve timing without having the pistons, block and valves in place?

Regards,

Jamie.

  NOW THAT'S A GOOD IDEA.

Hi there. Came across these finger rubbers, which are fantastic for those jobs where you don't need full pair of gloves which is great for the environment. I have used them for so many jobs like greasing filling practically anything where you would have applied gloves, I even used one the other day when i cut my finger in the garage on a sharp bolt.
I got mine from Ebay they are called Finger Cots £3.00 for 100.
schoolboy jokes on a postcard please.
Thought I would share
