  Launch of electric Austin
Posted by: Nick Salmon - 29-01-2025, 09:00 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (46)

Big article in The Times today on the launch of the two seater electric Austin. Getting hugely positive comments.

Many will have seen John Stubbs and his prototypes at the Centenary and at Nat A7 Rally.

This link should get past the paywall.

  Reducing from 12 to 6V
Posted by: PeterN - 27-01-2025, 07:15 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (6)

I've returned my Chummy to 6V from the previous owner's 12V set up.
Everything is fine except for the clock which is 12V
Can I safely use one the variously advertised converters available from EBay etc or are there hidden problems with doing that. To avoid constant time resetting I'd plan to power the clock from a permanent (fused) battery connection.

  Core plug seat corrosion

Does anyone know the best way to seal a core plug which has a corroded seat?

  Oil pump gear/camshaft gear mesh
Posted by: wild_willy - 26-01-2025, 01:46 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (3)

It would seen that I have quite a bit of slack in this gearset. The gears themselves look OK and not worn thin. Damned difficult to get an actual measurement with these gears in place

Would anyone know what sort of figure for the mesh of these gears should be or any reason why this might be?
Any thoughts would be most appreciated.
Thank you

  A supercharged Ulster - or a Bugatti?
Posted by: Tony Griffiths - 23-01-2025, 11:46 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (6)

A supercharged Ulster - or a Bugatti? An interesting selection of Austin 7s for sale - s supercharged Ulster for 52 guineas (£54 : 10s : 0d) or, a choice of two Bugattis for a little more? Take your pick.
A surprising number of "specials" on offer, too, including a 'rebuilt' chassis.

  The first twin-cam article?
Posted by: Tony Griffiths - 23-01-2025, 09:47 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (8)

The first twin-cam article? The Light Car, March 20th 1936. This was a two-page spread that I've digitally restored and joined as a single A3-size page.
If you'd like a wall-sized banner, you can download a high-resolution (45 Mb) copy from https://lathes.co.uk/austin7/first-twin-cam-article.jpg
Click the image below for a readable, higher-resolution view.

  Cleaning Block Waterways
Posted by: Martin Baker - 21-01-2025, 05:08 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (10)

I am having to get a block re-bored following the seizure of the engine in our Pearl on the way to David Nightingale. I thought I would take the opportunity to de-rust the water jacket. I am considering using  Bilt Hamber - Deox-C. Does anyone have any experience or alternative suggestions?

  source for taper pins
Posted by: Erich - 20-01-2025, 08:39 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (5)

Hi All,

I'm on the hunt for taper pins for the gearbox levers which push on the bearing carrier to disengage the clutch. I've asked a couple of cherished suppliers who don't have these. I'm having some difficulty finding them here in the US. I think they might be No. 3 taper pins about 1.25 inches long. But I don't know what size the small end should be or how to determine the taper. The Austin part number is BH 85. As well, I need to source the washers/spacers which go on the lever shaft. These are part numbers BH87 and BH88.

Any sources are much appreciated.

  1929 Chummy Headlights
Posted by: Colin D Smith - 20-01-2025, 07:26 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (3)

Hi chaps,
I know this is a rather daft question,, here goes..
How does one take the headlight bezel off a 1929 chummy? Is it a twist, a pull. Help needed as I don't want to break anything...

Sorry its not any more interesting than that!
Many thanks, Blush
Colin x
