Oil pump gear/camshaft gear mesh - wild_willy - 26-01-2025

It would seen that I have quite a bit of slack in this gearset. The gears themselves look OK and not worn thin. Damned difficult to get an actual measurement with these gears in place

Would anyone know what sort of figure for the mesh of these gears should be or any reason why this might be?
Any thoughts would be most appreciated.
Thank you

So long as the gear teeth are not seriously worn without sharp ends on the teeth there is unlikely to be a problem. These gears are under fairly steady load in use, so they are not going to rattle against each other. If oil is always clean wear will be minimal. I have no idea what the clearance should be.

Me neither. I'd suggest that no clearance is way more dangerous than quite a bit.
I'd hope for perhaps 3 or 4 thou as an ideal, but if it's been running that way and there's no sign of excessive or unusual wear then I'd be inclined to leave it alone.

Could you perhaps get a rough figure by measuring rotation in the spindle from the bottom end with the cam held still?

Thanks Chris and Robert for your thoughts on this. I think I'll try a few oil gears to see if i get an improvement in lash amount. Maybe this is a pretty common issue which doesn't cause too much concern or problems.
