A rather fine illustration of the Twin Cam engine, published in The Motor.

Wheel nut torque on new studs
Posted by: Colin McLachlan - 30-11-2023, 06:08 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (8)

I've fitted brand new wheel studs all round on my hillclimb special, and would like advice please on the correct torque for tightening the steel nuts (fitted with correct tapered washers, as required for competition cars).
Cheers,
Colin.

  Bewildered
Posted by: AustinWood - 30-11-2023, 03:08 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (10)

We have reviewed the engine in our 1929 fabrid saloon. It was getting very noisy and leaking a great deal of oil.
The work incuded replacing the rear main lip seal, new piston rings, adjusting camshaft end float, enlarging oil pump adusting connecting rod balance and fitting a silicone block base gasket.
This has been successful in that the engine is quieter, smoother and oil tight however we are struggling to get it running properly.
With many years working on Sevens I've never encountered this before.
There were a number of faults.
We replaced the electronic distributer with a DK4. Repaired some carburettor (22FZ) issues.
The engine started easily and ran well untill it was warm. It then lost power and started misfiring and running very rough. This was eventually traced to a sticking exhaust valve. This has happened before and was a built up of carbon on the stem.

Cleaning and grinding valves improved things but the engine had a very bad flat spot. Opening the accelerator had no immediate effect but after a delay it was OK. It was spitting back as well. I took this to be weak mixture. That would also explain the sticking exhaust valve.
Today I replaced the jets. Now fitted 7.5 to both main and compensating. An immediate improvement. Running very well. But as it warmed up then started to bog down. Pick up now 100%.
Removed the plugs. Nos 1&2 look fine, Nos 3&4 are sooty. ie Mixture rixh on two cylinders, both on the same port. What can cause that?

All idea welcome

  Wire Brushes for Dremel Tools
Posted by: Jamie - 30-11-2023, 08:36 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (8)

Does anyone have a source of affordable wire brushes, suitable for Dremels, that do not shed their wires like confetti? I bought some recently for my Dremel and whilst they worked well enough, the bristles flew out almost constantly. My work coat had them embedded all up the sleeve, penetrating through to the clothing below. I threw the remainder away because they were so unpleasant to use.

Jamie.

  Dashboard switch is broken
Posted by: falcott - 30-11-2023, 08:00 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (5)

Hi all, I have an A7 Special, and a dashboard switch is broken. There are a pair of them on this dashboard. Is it an Austin part, or is it from something else? And does anyone know where I might find another? Thanks.

  Screw thread on Vacuum wiper
Posted by: Steve Bryant - 29-11-2023, 02:18 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (20)

Hi all just a quick question. I can't identify the screw thread for the two mounting screws that hold  the wiper unit to the windshield frame. Can someone confirm what they are please?

  Hello from a forum noob
Posted by: falcott - 28-11-2023, 08:16 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (11)

Hi all. I'll introduce myself if I may. My name is Geoffrey and I live in New Zealand. I've just bought an A7, my first after selling one exactly 40 years previous. The first Austin, 40 years ago, was a special, and this one is too. I don't know anything of it's history, except that it's built on a 1936 chassis, probably about 20 years ago.
Looking forward to learning and doing -- my first job is moving the driver's seat forward, which it's not designed to do, because I seem to have runty little legs.   Wink

  LEG AMPUTATION - HAND CONTROLS
Posted by: Dennis Nicholas - 27-11-2023, 11:54 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (21)

I have just had to have my right leg amputated just above the knee so am now looking at alternative ways of controlling brakes and accelerator so I can continue rebuild of my Nippy special.
Brakes are Morris Minor Lockheed hydraulics.
I have a Mini (MK!/11?) pedal box which bolts under the Nippy horizontal bulkhead.  The end of each pedal finishes in a short leaver that takes the forked end of a pushrod that will act vertically up into mini brake master cylinder.
The carb on the 1275 BMC A+ engine is to be a weber The current accelerator pedal is a standard one cut so as to take a bowden cable through the vertical bulkhead (as per the MM).
I do not know yet what prosthesis I can get on my stump.   I am just looking for ideas for operating the brakes and throttle.
All ideas welcome......maybe a drawing of how someone has overcome this.

I have access to welding and can usually make things up, but am not so good at design.
