Austin 7 Brooklands SS |

Hi all,
I am slowly starting the process of building an Austin 7 Brooklands SS, I will be using my dad’s early chummy that I will bring back from the UK to NZ, this is essentially a box of bits and is not an original, the benefit of this is it is a working and driving car with a phoenix crank in. So just a body to build...easy eh!
I have searched the entire web and have every image of the Brooklands SS body. I believe most of the images found are Tom Abernathy’s replicas. Some more web searching has concluded the plans have been purchased by Roach Engineering, I did cheekily contact them to see if they were willing to share the plans (long shot, but worth a punt).
I have enough info to reverse engineer a passible amateur DIY replica of Tom’s replica. The below is front of mind.
Body to chassis mounting points and brackets.
Steering box assembly
Accelerator pedal assembly
Chassis length – assuming its SWB but wheelbase length would be good.
I am thinking to do a fabric body with alum hood and wings. I am aware of 1 fabric body brooklands according to the web, any information on the owner of this would be great!
Cheers
Jim

Charging problems |

The charging system in my chummy has again stopped working. The cut out contacts are not closing, but if you manually close them the dynamo starts charging. D+ to earth is 32ohms. D+ to A is open circuit with contacts open 6ohms points closed. Anyone hot any ideas, I’m wondering now about the switch.

12 volt to 6 volt horns |

Hi All,
In converting my Ulster Rep from 12 volt to 6 volt, I just realized my horns(I have a Rist as well as a Klaxette) are intended for 12 volt. Will they work on 6 volt or will I need to flog them and find a proper 6 volt horn?

Spokes for late 1920s car |

The 8SWG spokes on my car are threaded 32TPI. Are new 32TPI nipples available in the UK?
I have been offered 40TPI nipples but then I have to replace all the spokes.
I note that to BSC standard 8SWG spokes should be threaded 40TPI, but did Austin deviate from this and make their 7 and 8SWG WITH 32TPI?
The wheels I have stripped all have ‘Austin script’ centres. No 40 TPI threads found on any..

Help Identify My Spares |

The 31 RN Saloon came with a few spares, a lot just detritus, but some potentially useful...if I can identify them. First, my lamps.
The car currently has chromed headlamps on it, which seem to correspond to the handbook as to their servicing (ie, a screw at bottom of lamp which allows access to the innards. Those lamps do not have pilot bulbs in them that I can see, and have fluted glasses:
I am happy enough with these lamps, assuming they work, as I think these are dipping-beam lamps (?), and may be genuine Seven lamps, perhaps from a later or sportier model? Is this switch on the side of the steering column for dipping the beam?
All RN photos I've seen that look fairly original in their details (like I really know, to be fair) have black-finished lamps. I do have a set of black-finished lamps in tough cosmetic condition in my spares, but they have pilot lights and I cannot figure out how you're supposed to gain access to the innards, the rim seemingly riveted in place. I tried to turn the rims while giving some gentle pressure inwards, but they don't seem to move.
Are these the "right" lamps for this car? Are they even lamps from a Seven? They have "pebbled" glass rather than fluted glass. I have a pair of new reflectors with pilot lights in the spares as well which would seemingly fit these.
I obviously have better things to do on the car but am curious.
The next mystery is this bunch of bits.
The second item in from the lower left is a window winder which matches on the one that is installed in the car, and the handle in the plastic matches the pull handle in the door cap that is also already installed (please excuse my nomenclature if I get misname things!), so those I think I can sort.
The larger window winder and what looks like an interior door handle, either side of the winder identified in previous graph I suspect may not be from this car, but maybe?
The smaller chrome pieces at lower right are mysteries at the moment. My sunroof has no hardware on it (neither handle nor locking mechanism) but unless the item at far-right is the handle, I don't know what any of these bits are.
The grubby bits at upper right are the cover panels for the transmission tunnel, I think (there is a piece with the remains of a handbrake gaiter on it out of frame, as well).
The painted brackets upper left are also mysterious.

Rear axle running temperature |

Got a new toy, infra red thermometer. Really for other jobs
where a normal thermometer is not suitable.
Just done a 20 mile run before tomorrows rain and on
return home checked the rear axle temperature.
Axle was 29C with ambient temperature of 9C (hot for NE Scotland !).
Temperature taken just next to diff filler plug.
Wonder if this seems about right and if anyone else has checked theirs.
I suspect about right, but always worth checking against others.

Dynamo overcharging? |

Hi,
I'm getting up & running after a while - and found I needed a new battery.
Looking at the ammeter, and watching the battery voltage, I think that I'm over-charging the battery - it's pushing the battery voltage up to over 8 volts on winter, and summer doesn't charge at all.
The car is a special, electrics are pretty early coil setup (declared reg date is 1927, but it's coil, not magneto) - I think the dynamo is probably a DEL
This is a fairly early dynamo, which I think has a shunt.
I'm pretty confident that all the wiring is correct - when on summer charge, I can see that the ammeter needle moves up just a fraction when I rev the engine lots - though not enough to charge!
Video explaining issue
I think my choices are:
1) Try and get the summer charge working and use that
or (probably preferred)
2) move to an electronic charge controller - which I'd be very happy with - it's a special (quite a tatty one!).
If I go for 2) does anyone have experience of one they've used successfully on a DEL Dynamo?
Thanks,
James
