  DK4A Timing Query
Posted by: John P - 16-03-2025, 07:02 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (3)

I've got an Ulsteroid fitted with a lightly tuned 2 bearing engine, an HS2 SU carburetor and 3-speed box.   It has a later "D" type axle which I think came from a van so presumable is a lower ratio.

There is some wear in the distributor but I don't think it's that bad.

The car starts easily and runs OK, if a little rough, but seems to lack power at lower speeds.   I've just been out fot another test drive and as soon as I start to climb even a slight hill in 3rd at 30 mph the speed quickly starts to drop and I need to use 2nd to carry on.   In 2nd it climbs quite well and, if anything, the engine is somewhat smoother.

Presumably when I change down and the revs increase the auto-advance increases the advance so does this suggest the static advance need to be further increased.  At the moment static timing is set to around 6 degrees BTDC (possibly a little less) and the distributor has an 8 degree action plate.

I've only ever driven this car so don't have much to compare it with.

John.

For those who haven't seen my wanted post, I'm looking for just one 1" brake shoe suitable for re-lining so as to make up a full axle set. Why I only have 3 of them I don't, quite, understand Rolleyes

  No start.

Hello friends.  I am having a problem with 'Trundles' my 1930 Austin Swallow.  It won't start.

Given fresh petrol and a charged up 6 volt battery the issue seems to be ignition related.

I gave up on my old 'Rist' coil because although the primary coils showed an acceptable 1.4 Ohms, the secondary coil reading was down to 2.7 kOhms.

With my replacement coil (new Remax) fitted, the engine still won't fire. It shows 1.6 Ohms primary and 6.8 KOhms from secondary. With the 6 v supply connected to a fly lead taken to earth and the HT lead making what appears to be a good contact in the tower. I have still been unable to get a spark with plug end held close to a head stud.

Is the new coil a duff.?

Further testing revealed  full battery voltage from both sides of the coil to earth.

6 volts also showing at distributor.  With the points open I am getting 6 volts at the primary terminal to earth. With the points closed I am getting 0 volts.

The points are showing 3.9 amps.

The resistance is 0.05 KOhms.

This is all getting above my pay grade.  Can anyone help please?

Information Sheet for RH European Breakdown
Posted by: Association Secretary - 13-03-2025, 08:12 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (6)

Advice to members about RH European Breakdown Recovery Scheme – 13.3.25

A7CA representatives recently met with RH Specialist Insurance to discuss the types of breakdown cover they offer for clients travelling in Europe.

RH use DAS and ERS to oversee the recovery service in mainland Europe and you can choose the service you wish to take out, during your renewal conversation with RH.

During our meeting with RH it became clear that they consider ERS suits the needs of Austin Seven owners better. If using ERS, there are several procedures and choices to be made which are illustrated in the flow chart below1 .

The key point to emphasise is that to be eligible for any onward travel you must allow RH to identify a local garage, have the car recovered to it and then let the local garage decide whether they can repair the car or not.
