Yesterdays lunchtime meeting of Senior members. Given possibly 50 years of experience (or foolishness) each; adds up to a few years of experience.  Enjoyed by all. From the left; Ian Brough, Andy Lowe, Ron Rudge, Mike Tebbet, Paul Cooper, Les Gammon, Robin Boyce, Bob Hewston

  Cutting Narrow Strips of Metal
Posted by: Jamie - 29-02-2024, 01:56 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (16)

Vaguely Austin Seven related:

I wish to use my set of bench shears to cut strips of metal approximately 4mm wide. They need to be parallel and of consistent size.

The strip is narrower than the thickness of the blade, making it difficult to use a conventional fence or stop as the blade would hit the stop.

Does anyone have a suggestion how to set up an adjustable stop so that I cut the strips consistently and without having to measure each one?

Thank you.

Jamie

  Here we go again!
Posted by: Parazine - 27-02-2024, 01:14 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (12)

My youngest son has been expressing an interest in owning an Austin Seven ever since the Centenary. He was tempted with a few Rubies but was put off when he found out they weren't eligible for trials use, which he also fancies having a go at.

I offered to go halves with him, if we could find a suitable, preferably vintage car at an affordable price. Last weekend, we bought this at the latest Richard Edmonds Auction in Chippenham.

Off the road since 1967 I believe, the body is actually very sound. It needs a few bits and pieces of welding around the usual areas in the floor, plus the spare wheel mounting is falling apart but otherwise, it's not too bad.
We're going to keep it with its "distressed" paintwork, make it as standard as possible, so that it can run in standard class but it looks like we'll need a new hood!

Priority is to get it driving ASAP, prove it over the summer and then get some marshalling in with a view to getting onto the Welsh and/or the Cotswold in the Autumn.

I'll provide updates as we go....

  1924 CAV switch panel
Posted by: Dirk73 - 25-02-2024, 02:23 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (8)

I recently found a very nice early CAV switch panel to go in my 1924 car and replace the incorrect later one that had been fitted, but i don't know anyone near me with an early Chummy to ask questions of.

So i wondered, could anyone here enlighten me on what the 3 buttons D, H & S should be operating?

Although i'm guessing S must be for the 'Sport Mode'  :-D

  Rear Axle Tramp in reverse
Posted by: timbigden@icloud.com - 25-02-2024, 01:22 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (7)

Hi all, I’m new to the A7 gang having purchased my 1933 PD about a month ago, so sorry if this has been covered before.
The car judders (tramps) violently when reversing, especially if turning at the same time. I’ve been told that it’s a characteristic of A7s but I’ve not seen any as bad as mine.
Having read some guidance on the Cornish club forum I suspected the flange on the end of the pinion being loose, but having removed the prop shaft, it isnt loose. The hardy Spicer joint is good, and the attachment of the front of the torque tube to the chassis is firm.
Any wisdom would be appreciated.

  Romsey in the 1950's
Posted by: John Cornforth - 22-02-2024, 10:24 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (3)

Hi

I was recently reminded of this collection of amateur colour films from the 1950s.  Plenty of pre-war cars whizzing about, especially in the first few minutes.  How many can you spot ?  Is that a parked Nippy at about 1:40 ? The setting is my local town of Romsey, and most of the buildings still look pretty much the same.
