Station Square, Paignton, taken in 1946, submitted by Jeff Taylor. Because of the scarcity of new cars, the Seven was probably worth as much as it had cost new!

  Fuel Gauge Sender Unit float
Posted by: David Stepney - 31-01-2023, 10:34 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (13)

For the last 4 years, I have been using an old champagne cork to replace the metal float on my car's sender unit, which, when removed looked more like colander.
Now, however, the gauge has once again stopped reading correctly, the reason being that the cork has become petrol logged (I didn't know cork would do this!)
Amongst my bit and pieces, I have found a new plastic float from the later type Smiths sender unit which would be an ideal replacement if I can find a way of attaching it to my sender's arm.
Gluing it along the lines of where the original float was soldered to the arm would be the ideal solution, but most glues don't like petrol.
Can anyone think of, or recommend a glue that is petrol resistant?

  Faulty LED
Posted by: Howard Wright - 31-01-2023, 09:20 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (12)

Hi All

I’ve had a most frustrating afternoon.

I mentioned in another post that the brake light switch on the Brookfields was sticking on.  What I hadn’t realised that when pressing the brake pedal both the brake and side lights came on!  I only realised as the front sidelights came on as well. The sticking switch was easily solved the brake and sidelight situation not so.

I know you shouldn’t assume anything but my wiring was, to me, the obvious culprit.  A couple of hours later and the wiring checked and rechecked the real problem turned out to be a faulty LED bulb.  The stop tail light was bought from a good supplier (I can’t remember which one!) and has worked OK for two years!

So if you have lighting gremlins don’t immediately jump to conclusions and bulbs can turn faulty!

Cheers

Howard

chasing the history of our Ruby
Posted by: phillips - 31-01-2023, 08:23 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (1)

Hi all, well for a number of years now, off and on, I have been trying to trace the history of our 1936 Ruby, reg number FMC 849. And the last bit of information I had was the Ruby was last heard of down in Brighton, this was back in the late  70’s our Ruby was then owned by a Mr Brian E Morane, of Denmark street Brighton.

When we  then purchased  the Ruby from a garage down West Wales, in the late 80’s, it was in a bit of a’ mess’ can any A7 Friends  shed any light as to the last known  owner of our Ruby, as I understand Mr Morane was a member of the Austin Seven Owners  Club. Many thanks in anticipation. S&P

4 speed remote gear change lever
Posted by: Oxford Jack - 30-01-2023, 02:45 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (14)

At Brooklands on Sunday, I saw an RTC with the remote gear shift shown in the attached photo. Apparently it works very well and in order to engage reverse, nothing more than pulling the lever over is required to lift the gearbox end over the stop.
I don't recall having seen one before, were they a part manufactured in numbers or is it a one-off special?
If anyone knows I would be interested to hear, thanks in anticipation
Jack

  RN number plate bar
Posted by: Scarlet O'Hara - 30-01-2023, 01:01 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (5)

Having taken off the Ruby luggage rack I need to replace it with something else. Looking at photos the common theme seems to be a wrap around flat bar strap (1" x 1/4"?). Can anybody post a picture of the original fixing arrangement underneath, possible there's just some right angle plates bolted on. Thanks.

Chummy, Swallow 2-seater,  Mulliner, Saloon, Cup, etc. postcards on eBay: Click the images twice for larger, clearer, higher-resolution copies. Naturally, I favour the AF with it's hyper-rare bonnet sides with the louvres in two depressions!  He has similar items as well: https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_ssn=c...3561.l2562

No, it's not joke - if you live in or near a ULEZ zone it's recommended that you buy an Austin Seven.
