  Ulster rep body references
Posted by: merlinart - 07-03-2018, 07:44 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - No Replies

Greetings all

I could do with a second and third opinion if I might be so bold.

I'm playing about lining up the bonnet side panels, lower side panels and the radiator cowl.

Rod Yates suggested firstly to level up the bare chassis prior to body trial fitting. I've placed the bare chassis on my elevating table and levelled it up accordingly, then lowered the body on to it, bolting it down.

Rod then said that the lower side panels (not the louvred ones) are then levelled as well, before bolting to the cow horns, then finally the radiator cowl is fitted at right angles to the top of the lower side panels.

All of the above sounds good common sense, and I guess that all vintage cars must have been assembled on level chassis in the factories in general?

My only concern is that the curved ends of the side panels are slightly out with the scuttle curve, though this is not at all onerous to correct. If I were to fit the curves of the side panels into the curve of the scuttle (as the side panels are now), then the lower side panels are not level in relation to the chassis. Clearly though, the louvred upper side panels could be adjusted level, but this would seem wrong.

I am using a BAINES IRS 0117EP rubber moulding around the panels/cowl/bonnet.

My feeling is that levels and right angles must be correct with these things?

Your thoughts would settle my mind, not that I ought to doubt Rod.

regards

Arthur

  Ulster hose trim
Posted by: Douglas Alderson - 06-03-2018, 08:41 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (5)

Hi what do people use as the hose for the top edge of the body panel at the sides of a Ulster where you step into the car.  From old photos it looks to be about the same diameter as the rim of the steering wheel so about 1", but all the ones we have tried all appear a bit lose and the wall of the tube need to be thicker.  Any one have a suggestion, the one in the photo is 1" diameter with a wall thickness of about 1/4".

  Rear axle droning noise
Posted by: Tattybogle - 06-03-2018, 01:09 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (8)

A few months ago I obtained a late D-type rear axle and overhauled it prior to fitting it to my car. New bearings and seals all round. I set up the CWP adjustment according to Woodrow and everything else I could glean elsewhere.

During the overhaul I found that the pinion shaft had considerable end float and the crown wheel has run-out (sorry, I can't recall the figures for each).

After installing in the car the axle appeared to work well.  The only negative thing is a droning noise at a steady 35/40 mph with light throttle. It doesn't happen when accelerating or on trailing throttle.

Can anyone suggest what may be causing this, and point me towards what I should be looking for before I tear it all to pieces again?

I had not driven the axle before I bought it, so I don't know if it made this noise before the overhaul.  I suppose it is possible that, if it had previously been used for a long time with the pinion end float, the CWP gears might have worn unnaturally.  Perhaps it is the effect of the crown wheel run-out and I shall just have to live with it.

My previous axle didn't make this noise, nor did any of the A7s I have owned before, so I know it is not right.

It would be great if I could adjust the mesh of the CWP and eliminate the noise,  but I guess that would be a tricky operation with the axle on the car.

Any suggestions gratefully received!

  How warm and cozy ?
Posted by: Steve Bryant - 06-03-2018, 02:02 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (10)

The S'no Fun  thread is great and its very cool to see the cars out in the snow.

Having not had the pleasure of driving my Seven yet I really have no idea of what the experience would be like in the snow with the cold temperatures that go with it. So while driving our older Volvo to another city in  winter conditions (blowing snow and minus 15C temps)  I starting wondering about how Sevens cope with the cold etc. and if there were any creature comforts.

  • Just how warm does a seven get?
  • How are you all coping with the mist/ frost on the windows?
  • Since the car doesn't have a heater would there be a practical way to produce heat for the interior?
  • Has anyone fitted or come up with a heater installation that works without modifying the car  that it can't be returned to its previous state?

I know this all sounds rather elementary, but I am just curious. The idea of being in a nice cozy seven while driving in the snow is appealing.

Cheers Stephen
