  Re-Seating Pressure Relief Valve
Posted by: John P - 14-09-2023, 10:19 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (5)

Hi,

I recently replaced the ball and spring of my pressure relief valve to try to rectify a low oil pressure on start-up issue.

At the time I wasn't too happy with the idea or re-seating the valve my using a drift to bang the ball against the seat so simply cleaned the area and fitted the new parts.

For a different reason, and before being able to try running it, I have had to remove the engine again so have another possible opportunity to try the re-seating process.

I'm still not totally happy with the idea but will be even less happy if I haven't overcome the low oil pressure and have to remove the engine yet again.

What's the general consensus on this?

John.

Windoe=w glass and winder for sale
Posted by: Nick Mayne - 13-09-2023, 06:22 PM - Forum: Sales - No Replies

I think this glass (see picture) is from a Ruby and it needs a new home as it is wasted here! Included is a Ruby window winder which works freely. The winder has the metal trim plate just about shown behind the unit.
Modest offer accepted but probably best to collect from SG192RP. It is easy to replace the channel holding the window; I have done that on my van.

  Big end lubrication
Posted by: Nick Mayne - 13-09-2023, 11:05 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (2)

I have a failed big end on my Austin 7 after only maybe a couple of hundred miles. I think I made a mistake on original assembly by interposing rods 1 and 2 and although new they may have been machined differently if the journals were slightly different sizes.
The crank only needs a polish but we have decided to replace all four big ends white metalling. The company doing it seem to be very experienced as they were doing the same job on the crankshaft/big ends of a Rolls Royce Silver ghost and also completing the build of an Arrow but I don't know how many A7s they have white metalled.
They thought the oil groove which Austin machined across the full width of the bearing would be better made 'blind' to retain more oil around the bearing. Of course that would be different to the original Austin design that has existed forever but possibly Austin did it that way for ease of machining. It would be interesting to be a guinea pig in having blind grooves but could be expensive if it did not work! I would appreciate opinions on this from those who have some expertise and hope it makes for a lively discussion. I attach a picture of a rather dusty old big end from my store so the groove can be seen.

Posted by: MatthewMyerscough - 12-09-2023, 06:35 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (7)

Hi Everyone

This is a bit of a long shot, but does anyone know of the existence of engine crankcase M252221?

I can see its not on the register so I imagine it is long gone but I thought I would ask in case it sounds familiar to anyone.

Thanks

Matthew

  1933 brakes

I'm used to the earlier one piece brake cross shaft on the RN saloons and disconnecting the rear offside brake cable front the cross shaft lever is difficult but how do you remove the cable from the later two piece cross shaft lever? I can't even see the clevis pin split pin.

  Good bye old friend
Posted by: bob46320 - 11-09-2023, 05:44 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (10)

Back in 1975, I bought the remains of a1932 RN Saloon for £100. Then, 2 kids, 2 house moves, 2 garage builds and 24 years later JV1394 was back on the road after being used as a chicken shed in Surrey. Her first duty was to be the wedding car for my daughter. Now, 48 years later she has been sold to a French Austin enthusiast who I am sure will care for her as we have done. So sadly,  it will be bye bye Austin seven friends and hello to Classic Mini (well you have to have something to play with in the garage).
French regulations mean that the first French reg 3488KE46 will be struck off on transfer but the new owner has promised to let the registrar know the new number and owner details in due course.

Thanks for all advice given by fellow members, comments and encouragement.

Bye Bye
Bob Humphrey

  Cellulose

Does anyone  know where I might get cellulose white primer? My current supplier has been sending me something which clearly isn't cellulose!

I've tried Craftmaster, they can only do grey.
