  Could this be an Austin?
Posted by: Colin Morgan - 20-02-2025, 03:09 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (9)

Hi,

This is on a Rochdale history website.  Not sure it is an Austin, nor about the date.

  With or without?
Posted by: DickB - 20-02-2025, 11:27 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (13)

Having bought an PD to occupy myself during the winter months,I am coming to the point of having to put it all back together.( well most of it as I am sure I will have a box of can't remember where those came from bits left over). I digress. Two current questions I would appreciate opinions on. The engine has a beautiful new Phoenix crank and gorgeous remetalled big ends with the bolts secured by nyloc nuts. And no washers. I cant seem to find a definitive answer to with or without and am hesitant to replace the bolts and nuts without washers and whilst I have confidence in the crank and rods themselves, I have my doubts over whoever put it together. There is adequate room to accommodate a suitable flat washer. Was it a mistake not to use washers or an example of engineering in this particular application I am unfamiliar with.

My chassis and body when assembled had a covering of carpet between them where they touched. I am unaware of whether it was Wilton, Axminster or some cheap nylon variety and would like to know the current suggestions for a suitable material to use instead.

Lastly,I am considering starting a petition for the abolition of Hermatite on Austin 7 components. As I examine various parts of the mechanicals I seem to find it lurking insidiously waiting to escape and wreak havoc at some point in the future. Any support?

  Gearbox issues
Posted by: Erich - 19-02-2025, 06:34 AM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (2)

Fxxckin' 'ell. So after much modification to a mid twenties three speed, it has the boss for an additional mounting bolt, I have discovered an issue. I have modded the clutch etc., to the Terry Griffin specs. And now I find that there are three large cracks on the O/S boss where the clutch shaft goes through the bell housing. I have no idea how or when this occurred. Weld it up or is that a fool's errand? One crack appears to have been there for some time as its full of oil/grease. Have others had this issue and what causes this?

  SU float
Posted by: Nick Salmon - 18-02-2025, 05:52 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (1)

I am on the hunt for a replacement float for the SU that's on the Box saloon. If someone has one they would sell, I'd be very grateful. There's a small amount of liquid sloshing in the float and it has much soldering (round the back in the pic) on it by the p/o. I'd really rather find a good one than resolder it.

Not entirely sure what size the carb is but the inlet throat is 27mm so I guess it may be 1" 1/8th.

Float measures 35mm height, 39.5mm diameter, and the central hole is 6.9mm.

Edit - A bit of digging tells me it is a T1 type float.

  Fifty years of crankshafts
Posted by: dheywood - 15-02-2025, 04:07 PM - Forum: Forum chat... - Replies (5)

In 1975 there was a sales announcement from the late John Miles: Lotus engineer. F1 racing driver and Austin Seven enthusiast. He was selling a batch of new 1.5 inch pressure fed crankshafts, made for him by Gordon Allen of Slough. Machined from EN40B steel and nitrided, the narrower journals, thicker webs and  radiused corners eliminated the crack-inducing changes of section that had weakened the originals. Miles gave a list of satisfied purchasers, all happily racing their Sevens without fear of explosions in the crankcase. The price for an Allen crankshaft was £150, but hurry because the next batch will cost £200. Enquirers were invited to phone John Miles, or write to his North London address.
