Not all that relevant but just an example of social history. When I started work at an engineering firm in Sheffield as a 16 year-old apprentice in the early 60's there were five different levels of dining. The works canteen for persons in boiler suits (Formica tables/plastic faced chairs), staff dining room for people in office clothes, manager's dining room ( oak panels and padded seating), director's dining room, (waiter service) and the chairman's suite in the top of the 6 storey office block with his own kitchen and superior food and chef. When I retired from the same firm 44 years later there was no food made on the
premises, just a sandwich van calling at lunchtime, and free coffee and tea machine in the mess room.
