What have you done today with your Austin Seven
I learned to put cotton wool in my ears. Car was good then for another 500 rpm. I do 360 mile day trips a few times a year in my 1964 modern which tools along at a tedious 4000 rpm at the speed limit. I find cotton wool makes for less tiring trip.
Run a "modern" with any floor panel removed and the noise is unnerving. The old style starters engage with a helluva crash.
In their day, to mid 50s, on the roads of the time, 45 mph was quite a respectful speed for many cars. My father used to drive ours at 45 on long trips but took it back to 40 as he found it too fatiguing. We bought a "modern" 1952 Hillman in 1957 . Persons ised to discuss cars a lot. Many owners of simialr cars and A40s reported 45 as thier usual speed. Not many held 50, then the legal but unenforcable limit here.
