What have you done today with your Austin Seven
Removed the petrol tank on my ARR Ruby today to repair the petrol sender unit as the gauge isn't working, when the tank was dry I found all the inside of the tank was covered in a white powder also the float on the sender was covered it cleaned of with brasso, could anyone tell me is this caused by old petrol or some thing that's been added to keep the petrol clean.

Thanks for all replies

Today I have mostly been...

Refitting the dynamo (with new front bush) to the cup model and installing the electronic distributor.
Removing the steering box from the fabric saloon for an overhaul.
Cleaning out the bits of shredded vee belt from my Smart Roadster which killed itself on the way home from work!

So a productive day overall!

Peter

p.s. I had forgotten quite how well the car runs on the electronic distributor. It's a shame that they aren't eligible for VSCC events as it means that I'll have to change it out again before the start of the season!

Today I solved what had become a chronic misfire on the RP!  Compression test showed 8.2 bar on all except no.2 which was 0.2 bar. Suspecting inlet valve  no.2, removing the valve chest cover revealed rather an excessively wide gap - 0.250" instead of 0.006"! I've never seen one as big as that before!!
No wonder the valve wasn't opening.
Just glad I didn't dive in and remove the head first!

Somethings not right there . One valve is longer than the others...

I agree, but the engine is one of unknown former provenance, and I haven't dismantled it (yet) to see whether the valves are all of the same type. Years ago inlet and exhaust valves different types of individuals, antdI wonder whether a previous owner had muddled them up. At least compression has been restored........

Well. I now have a handbrake again. The dims quoted were pretty much spot on. The adjuster misses the propshaft by about 2thou!.

Has anyone modified the floor to get more travel? If I were to reprofile the sloped bit on the tunnel, say take the base back another 1/4 inch. The lever would go back a fair bit more, and there is loads of space in the slot in the cover. And the cover would hide it all in anycase. Hmm

Such a lovely day today so had a little run in my newly built special around near home. There are some strange placenames round these parts, including the village of Dungworth. Running nicely now after 200 miles but it will have to go to make way for new project.
Cheers,
Dave
