What have you done today with your Austin Seven
For the reserve to work, both knobs have to be pulled out. Its a good idea to open the reserve tap every now and again to make sure that is not "clogged up" and remember to shut it again a little bit later.

Thanks, All clear now

Did you just turn the whole tap through 180 - or swap the main-feed pipe (that sticks up into the tank) into the hole that would normally feed reserve?

Dave - That wouldn't work (Would it?). The main tap shuts off ALL fuel (Reserve and main). Under normal tank conditions, fuel can flow through just the main (Main being the one with the tube). If the reserve tap is shut, then when the top of the tube is in free air, fuel delivery stops. If you swapped the tube about, the tube would then be on the port for the reserve and you wouldn't get fuel unless both the main and reserve taps were open. You wouldn't know that you were running low until you had run out (I think).

What Dave has done - and I know it works because he drives the car rather a lot - is to have the main tap under the bonnet instead of the reserve. Hence, when he runs out in the overtaking lane on the M6, he just reaches under the dash and pulls on the reserve. The main, still being open, allows the flow to continue.

I’m making progress nailing the box saloon together, after its second strip down and there have been the usual challenges along the way, but just occasionally you have a bit of luck, like opening a dusty old box and finding a brand new, old stock box saloon radiator core...I think I might pour myself a glass of something and sit in the sun!

Hi Ivor
Tell us more please, or are you jesting about your presentation ability?

No jesting Bob, I have a stack of boxes that I had stored in my old sheds before I moved to the Isle of Wight and then moved back to the mainland and all sorts of surprises have turned up, but nothing as good as this one, which I’d forgotten I had!

A beautiful evening so my little boat tail took my daughter and myself out for an evening pint..
Unfortunately a mile or so from the pub the engine started missing and then died..  I suspect a fuel blockage somewhere but then discovered I'd rushed out without my tool roll!  Couldn't find anything fixable with no tools, but luckily we were only a mile or so from where my little red special is stabled and it was all downhill so I was able to freewheel down and swap 7s and complete the journey home !  The problem with the boat tail will have to wait until the weekend..

I'm still hopeful that one day you will find a small piece of silver foil...
