Taking the Ulster for a Rolling Road session prior to Shelsley on Saturday. Significant improvements just by setting it up properly. Even better because the session was run by my Grandson who will share the car with me on Saturday and will, no doubt, beat me!!

Took the Pytchley saloon on its first serious run today, clocked up about 50 miles.  Its the first time the engine has had any proper use in about 20 years.  Went down to Boroughbridge to see Duncan Grimmond, on arrival at his workshop I remembered that he is on holiday in Northumberland, so returned to Thirsk on the 'old A1' that runs alongside the new road.  The Pytchley was cruising only slightly slower than the HGV's on the A1 so I reckon it was doing about 55mph with no fuss at all.  Pleased to say that the brakes are improving with use, all four wheel centres are now warm after a run, which is encouraging.

Tantalising statement! Big gains are often made with cars too powerful to road test. But I am surprised you could gain much on a Seven just by tweaking needles and timing. Curious what made such a difference please..

If I was up in Northumberland today I would be having a pint of Spindrift with you on the green in front of the Ship Inn at Low Newton.
The Pytchley was good while it lasted!  I thought it was down on power as I climbed out of Felixkirk towards Boltby yesterday afternoon.  This morning I looked at the engine and saw the tell tale sign of blown oil around the centre head stud between cylinders 2 and 3.  Took the plugs out and sure enough there was coolant on the top of pistons 2 and 3.  Drained it down and took the head off, the stud between cylinders 2 and 3 has pulled.   Thinking back on this engine I have had my suspicions about this particular head stud for a while, it will need helicoiling or a stepped stud fitting.   I think it will be possible to do it with the engine in-situ.
I was going to use the Pytchley to go to the Druids Circle at Masham with the PWA7C Yorkshire Group, it will have to be the Ulster now!
If the head stud is the only problem on a special built over several years for next to nothing I am still a happy man.

I disagree. I simply don't trust rolling road figures very much - engine dyno yes.

And Bob I'm not at all surprised at the improvement despite Steve knowing how to build and set up a fast Seven. With less experience the start point may be lower.
