We had 24 young drivers take part in the Scottish Austin Seven Club track day.
Families came from across Scotland, Leicestershire, Manchester and York too.
Never have we seen so many young people enjoying themselves driving.

Are owners of RN's JV 1193 or HY 5283 on the forum? |

I'm trying to sort out my RN saloon, chassis 156322 car No B59623 and changing all the Ruby mechanicals (engine, gearbox, back axle) back to original spec but I'm having trouble fitting the engine. JV 1193 is only 7 and HY 5283 only 6 cars earlier and I was hoping to ask a few questions of the owners and possibly get some photos. I'm sure my car is an RN (not an RP) and being 3000 odd vehicles before the major change to the mechanicals I'm equally sure it's not some hybrid and I am try to install the right bits. Alternatively does anybody own an RN close to Warrington that would be happy to let me have a close look at?

Cold starting |

My 1931 RN refuses to start from cold using the starter motor
It turns over OK on the starter but refuses to fire but starts easily first time if I swing it.
Therafter it's 'on the button' every time.
I'm assuming that because as it's still 6v the coil is being partially starved when using the starter. I've fitted a voltmeter which seems to confirm this The battery is in good condition.
I don't want to change to 12v - what are the alternatives?

SU fuel pipe orientation and route |

Hi All
A friend recently commented that the fuel pipe from gravity tank to the SU carburettor should be routed so that it enters the float chamber from the front of the car. He couldn’t tell me why although I respect his vast knowledge of Austin Sevens.
So I rerouted the pipe down under the carb and up to a banjo union. I had to do this as there was no room to run it around the carb. Since then I’ve had problems with what seems like fuel starvation on steep hills and when I put my foot down. I think this may be down to possible vaporisation in the pipe.
Can anyone confirm my friend’s idea that the pipe should enter the carb from the front of the car and also confirm my suspicions that a loop down and up might cause vapourisation?
Cheers
Howard

Working out a head gasket failure |

Following on from my 'what have you done' post where we were trailered home following what I suspected was a head gasket failure, here's what happened next. Appreciate it is an old story for most experienced hands but I am pleased to have (hopefully) discovered the cause and it might be interesting for some as such failures are usually spoken about in relation to the condition of the block, either surface or cracks etc.
The head gasket last failled only 3000 miles ago, albeit it was 6 years ago as, due to a house move and 2 1/2 years of restorations where I have had to learn how to plaster, install stairs, kitrchens etc I haven't had much time for jaunts, the old girl was also sitting about 300 miles away from me for much of the time.
Anyway, head off this morning and as you can see the gasket had blown straight between 2 and 3.
A clean up and the block seemed to me to be relatively OK. No cracks, damage etc.
A close look at the head and you can see that the witness marks from the edge of the gasket are missing from the area where the gasket failed.
Then a bright light and a steel ruler revealed daylight from a depression in the head.
Luckily I have a nice ground head bought a few years back from the much missed Dave Orange.
Tomorrow it all goes back together.
So, any suggestions for someone I could send the failed head to for a skim, ideally North East?
Thanks
Andy
