Heat pumps
#21
I have a Mitsubishi air source heat pump, it has been installed and running for the last 4 years - I have underfloor heating throughout, south facing with great solar gains both summer and winter.
The house was extensively renovated and insulation installed above that of the required amount by Building Control.

I find the house very comfortable all year round and mostly wear shorts and t-shirt even in the middle of winter. I also have an electric Aga which can throw out the heat, this also runs all year round and adds to the open plan heating.

From experience through work, it would be hard to install one as a sole heating source into a property that has not been designed or upgraded to suit and would prove costly.

It is also worth noting that just because somthing is sold as being green and super efficient does not mean that it is cheep to run and maintain.

Tiger, If you look up EV Man on youtube he offers plenty of tips for heat pumps. There are a half dozen blogs he has done. His house is a conventional 1980s (?) building. He has installed a heat pump and has been very thorough with costs and the comparison with his previous gas boiler and he puts his humour and personality into the blog. So it can be done with good results.
I have been interested in every aspect of building a near Passivhaus bungalow and after 2 years of building and a previous year of research we should be moving into our’s before Xmas. Draught proofing is as important as insulation. Chimneys and wood burners are not a good idea for an energy efficient house.
There are architects who specialise in retrofit of buildings to increase energy efficiency so that could be an option for you.
I will not be going through the same exercise again as it has been very demanding of my time and energy nevertheless it has kept my brain working!
The heat pump grant ( the Boiler Upgrade Scheme) is £5000.
Good luck.

Tiger, apologies for my error re BUS scheme. I had an email yesterday from Ofgem telling me I could now upgrade my application to £7500 contribution from them.
Of course it will have nothing to do with a potential forthcoming general election.
Cheers, Dave.

No Tony, the car's likely to burst into flames as several Porsches are now doing!

I must admit I suppressed a chuckle when reading about the fire at Luton Airport, as the authorities have wasted no time in declaring that they "think a diesel powered car started it" way in advance of any conclusive findings!
My thoughts exactly. "thinking" is not evidence and the fireman's statement amounts to an attempted distraction. He should have stated the truth: "We have no evidence of what sort of vehicle started the fire." One wonders what the insurance bill for the debacle will be.

Apologies for taking this thread even further off-topic but I couldn't help but be intrigued by the VW Golf that appears to have escaped any damage in the Luton inferno. Whether they can get it out is another matter...

Starting the fire is one thing. Keeping it going with such intensity and for so long is another matter.
