Operator error with the wiring. Spotted that the "big" yellow wire had a faulty connector.

I tried to repair one and although I am used to fiddly little jobs and have locking tweezers and tiny pliers and baby spanners and pointy things that shouldn't go PING, I also gave up...

Me too, Duncan. Many years ago and, somewhere, I think I might still have the box that contains most of the remaining bits.
