copper rivet punch

Whilst i've found a good tool to do my clutch rivets, it doesn't roll them outward and I understand there is a correct tool that does. 
Can anyone give me a link to an ebay seller or otherwise?

I found on EBay a punch for leather eyelets did the trick. It was a small punch like tool with an end that fitted in the hole in the rivet rounding it over then flattening it making a secure fixing. I used a round piece of steel bar the same diameter as the rivet head fastened in the vice to act as an anvil.

John - I've got one of those, but apparently with a curved skirt to the punch then it seems to have some sort of spring washer effect.

Hi Jon

I think you need a “roll pin” punch.  I bought a set off eBay a year or so back but I’ve not really been able to master getting a neat result.  Perhaps others know better how to use them or if they are the correct tool for the job.

This is the punch that I have. It has a domed end that sits in the hollow of the rivet so that, when struck, the end of the rivet expands and rolls over making a neat job (most of the time!) It has to be struck dead square, however. The slot is to Miss the web on Austin 7 (and Triumph motorcycle)  aluminium brake shoes to ensure it is square on to the rivet. I use a suitably sized pin punch to rest the rivet head on as an anvil and an assistant to hold the work square on. Works for both brake and clutch linings.

Identical to mine, David and it does both brake and clutch rivets perfectly as you say. However, I've not used it in a long time as it's just so much easier to take both to Saftek and get them to do it.

Back in the automotive dark ages when we used to do such things in the shop on the regular, we were fortunate enough to have a proprietary foot operated brake rivet press (which we generally used for full brake relines), and the Ferodo thingie (which we used for single brake jobs to get the truck through its MOT equivalent). I much preferred the press over the punch as I felt it was a lot more controllable/repeatable and less chance of cracking a lining. But if you're doing your own work for yourself, there's no foreman to yell at you or angry customer to deal with so there's that...
