1927 ML magneto

Some help please,

Below is a proper ML magneto, as pictured in the 1927 parts book.

Not easy to get, and this one had to have a few parts made for it to get it to work.

However there is no wear to put the wire to cut out the mag and stop the engine.

   

The picture below is the end cap from the larger ML magneto fitted to blown ulsters

   

So does this meen the cab needs this court out wire fitting.

The next problem is, the first mag has an external cam. And the points spin around.

Were as the broken cap pictured from the ulster mag. Has a central cam shaft like a coil Distributer. So the points are fixed.

So the big question is does the cutout wire come of the centre bolt of the points wilst they are spinning around.

If so does anyone have a cap for sale they dont need.

Any help appreciated.

Indeed the way of grounding the rotating points is to contact on the centre bolt. What you need is to replace your brass points cap with one of these (see attached)

This type of cap has an spring loaded contact similar to the RF4 but it has a central carbon brush so that it has a little self lubricating effect. 

You then need a wire securing knob which is the same as the ones on the RF4.   

The photo is of a cap I have made moulds for. So I can supply you one of those if you need. The contact sets I may have a spare but would need to check what I have. 

If you need a replacement cap for the RF4 I have done a mould for those too.

Tony , I recently had a ML magneto rebuilt by Magneto Ignition Supplies. A first class job and they had to replace the End cap .They have some new spares for the ML Magneto. Reasonable price but the shipping was more than the rebuild.

Well after turning the phone off, it's amazing how much you can get done.

Monday and tuesday I stripped the top end of the van engine. And the carb. And checked everything else was hopefully ready to start.

Rebuilt it all tuesday.

Started it today, and it ran smooth. No smoke, no leaks. So far so good

And today I thought I'd get back to the MAG. (As the engine now runs, I also need to stop it).

I thought I had found a cap I could use from the waterlogged box?

Now admittedly the mag was still in the car so I couldn't properly measure it.

This is what I started with.

   

   

Stripped and cleaned it.

   

After 30 mins I had a nice end cap. Ready to fit.

   

   

Problem is IT DIDNT. Big Grin

So I went back into the rusty box.

   

After about 40 mins I had salvaged this.

   

The pin holding the wire is similar to the mag caps. It screws into the wire cord. 

So I had to use a thicker wire, to make sure it made a connection.

Now not only does the engine start, but it also STOPS.

   

I wont say the first car is now ready for the centenary, as it will need some road testing yet.

But we are well on our way.

hi charles,

i dont think its from an ML but it does fit. and work.

although i have contacted tom to get the correct cap so i can swap them over in the future.

but like you say, there is value in keeping boxes for spares.
