Wheel Lock Nuts and Washers
#1
I have recently return wheel Nyloc nuts to a supplier because they where very lose on the wheel studs, I measured them to be 15 thou over bored.
Can you suggest a suitable supplier for well designed lock nuts that will be OK for on and off of wheels, perhaps aircraft type of lock nuts and specialised washers.

It's better to use steel self-locking nuts such as aerotight in this application. They can be reused and grip firmly.

Hi AustinWood,
Which type of nut do you select from their range?
I presume they make them to the correct imperial thread - which is?
Do you get them in brass with chrome plating?
I ask, because the nuts on my Ruby, which are brass with chrome plating, are always working loose.

If you Google:
3/8 BSF aerotight nuts
there are many to choose from.

The brake drum and wheel must seat without a layer of congealed grease or thick soft paint. The brake drum setescrews must be below surface. if the wheels are worn the nuts must not bottom before clamping. Some metal can often be removed. It is generally recommned that wheel nuts are dry although I have always lubricatedn with a trace of light grease, after brushing away the old. Hopefully the studs not very stretched as so many are, visible from the thread pitch at root.
Countersunk locknuts in BSF very unlikley. The distorted metal variants not intended fro frequent removal; hard on the stud thread.

Thank you Austin I will proceed with purchase of Aerotight Nuts and will source a set of suitable washer to convert from the flat of the nuts to the countersunk holes in wheel centres.

You just need a set of heavy flat washers, I think mine are 1/8" thick bar turned washers, not need to worry about the countersink as the wheels are located on the pegs.
You still need to check the aerotight wheelnuts before competition driving.

I posted elsewhere and it didn't get answered then. I thought aerotight nuts only had a limited number of re-uses? How many would be appropriate for wheelnuts?

Hi Jon,
I have used the same Aerotight nuts since, 2012 so not an issue.
Its Nylocs which should be single use only.
