instrument bezel seals

Black tube silicone has been suggested, but what have others adopted for redoing the seal? I've realised that the thickness determines being able to get the bezel off by rotation - and why you cant get the bezel off when they harden. 
I do have a thin silicone sheet somewhere so perhaps I'm just being lazy... but worth asking.
