Mourning the passing of Vera Lynn, my RN named after the forces sweetheart.

Yes, she lived just up the road from me. She was the patron of a Polish air force memorial that I set up with some chums nearby, unveiling it in 2000 and signed 500 prints for me and copies of a book on Polish Spitfire squadrons I published. I wonder if she ever drove a Seven?!

This from Wikipedia.......Dame Vera Margaret Lynn CH DBE OStJ was a British singer, songwriter and entertainer ... She began performing publicly at the age of seven and adopted her maternal grandmother Margaret Lynn's maiden ... Lynn’s wartime contribution began when she would sing to people who were using London’s tube station platforms as air raid shelters—she would drive there in her Austin 7 car

HV 8777 was actually an Austin 10 and she talks about it in a BBC documentary at her 100th birthday.

A sad day. I met Vera Lynn in 1994, on the day that the Tour de France had a stage between Dover and Brighton. I was one of the Police escort motorcycle team working with French bikers from the Garde Republicaine of the CRS. The route passed over Ditchling beacon and then through Ditchling itself. Dame Vera was standing at her gateway to watch the spectacle go past her house (along with crowds of other people) and I was lucky to have the opportunity to stop alongside her momentarily and say hello. Lovely Lady. She will be sorely missed.

A true legend. We were playing one of her 78's only the other day and it still holds up 80-odd years after she recorded it.

Vera Lynne's Austin ten showing the registration number HV 8777. My seven is HV 4459.

Her car looks to be the Austin 10 Conway cabriolet from 1936, with the later bumper and wipers below the screen.
