Not sure how you would use a micrometer when balancing rods.

Maybe not with micrometers but the point being made is the difficulty and care needed when measuring anything down to small figures - a few grams in this case for balancing.

If you are having trouble with a micrometer's accuracy I would suggest you are being overly pedantic! Balancing components to within a gram is worthwhile in my experience, even if you had a slightly bigger tolerance it is a dam sight better than +/-10g found in some rod piston sets.
