Speedo cable routing - RP
#1
Please could somebody tell me what route the speedo cable should take on an RP?
At the moment it has rather a sharp curve round from the gearbox and feeds up between the clutch pedal and the bulge for the starter motor housing at the back of the crankcase.

Thanks Bruce - that route looks better than mine, so I'll give it a try.

Do please post the info here - I'd like to know too!
I haven't yet found a way of doing it which doesn't foul the steering one way or another.

I asked one of the professional fettlers and he told me that he had tried several different routes, all of which looked wrong...

Sorry, didn't think anyone else would be interested. First pic shows the lower part of the cable which passes between the drag link and ther radius arm, and avoiding the brake cable. If you look closely you can follow the curve of the outer cable all the way to the bulkhead.

The second picture shows the location of the cable from the bulkhead grommet leading to the back of the dashboard. It passes to the right hand side of the coil down to the offside of the radius arm:

The cable is free and not secured other than by the gearbox connection and the bulkhead grommet. It has been like that for 40 years.

My speedo cable route is similar to Bruce's:-

Like Bruce's car, the only support the cable has is its connection to the gearbox and the grommet through the bulkhead. the only modification is that I have cable-tied the outer cable to the front crossmember to stop it getting mixed up with. the steering drop arm and draglink.

Please excuse the state of the car underneath - it does get well used!

Thank you both - I will take your photos out to the garage and show them to the car...

And particular thanks to Bruce - I have to say that I am very grateful that you have gone to so much trouble in dismantling half the car so that you could get a good photo - definitely going the extra mile...  Smile

Good morning to you all. I bought my first.Austin 7 Ruby just under three weeks ago, and I’m slowly bringing it back to life.

I’ve ordered a new speedometer cable which should arrive today. I was also wondering the routing and so am also very grateful to all of you who have posted here. I’ll post some photos once completed. (I don’t recall the hole through the bulkhead but at least I now know where to look ?)
