I noticed there were no sidelights in the old photo, then I see the car in the later photo...and there are no lights at all. !!

On the original car the flyaway mudguards look to be much more generous with full infill panels and a small running board. 

I think this gives a better appearance than the small guards.

Much like the original road going 'Ulster' with full guards and running board and not cycle guards- the body designers at Austins knew their jobs.

As you say, Tony, the original Burghley wings are much more substantial:

   

I suspect the car in my original post has had the headlamps moved from the scuttle to the front, the scuttle brackets look too substantial for the little sidelights.

I used the photo of those "butterfly" wings as a guide when I built my first special all those years ago. I gather the purchaser hasn't driven it at all in the dozen or so years since he bought it. Polished and "blinged" up, it sits in a showroom... carefully rebuilt engine not quite "run in" and then left to deteriorate, heigh ho!
