Rearward facing, forward working, then?

Like Tony and the others, I have always thought of the under the bonnet starters as forward facing. If you do not get one in the next week, I may be able to find you one. Busy for the next week with SWA7C Bryngarw rally.

Yes, I'm with Tony and John on this; I have never heard of the in-cab starter referred to as forward-facing.

With the starter motor inside the cab (and with the starter button on the floor), the term everyone I know uses for this arrangement is "rearward-facing", i.e. the body of the starter faces to the rear of the car. Unfortunately, this starter is not easily found. Be aware that some unscrupulous (or ignorant) traders in used parts have fitted the wrong starter to the aluminium housing that bolts in place above the flywheel. How do I know? Yes, that's right....

I never use the terms 'forward-facing' or 'rearward-facing' as I can never remember which starter motor they refer to! I always say: 'starter in the cockpit' or 'starter under the bonnet'. Completely clear and unambiguous Smile

You guys crack me up. I've always thought of the in-cockpit starters as forward facing, with bacon slicers being a type of this. But I'm still working on general Brit speak, and managed to say "whilst" in conversation the other day which elicited a bit of a curious look from the person I was speaking with.

I have always assumed Starter Motor refers to the body of the Starter Motor which is in fact facing toward the rear of the car for the 'in cockpit' motors. The drive does face forward and if you refer to the starter motor drive then it is forward facing.

I seem to remember many years ago Veteran and Vintage magazine used to run a column 'Minutiae for the Cognoscenti'
