Apparently, the story is on Facebook. My son was quite interested, it turns out that the registration number (which is a 3 x 2) is not on the DVLA database but the vendor wanted to transfer it off before the sale. He didn't realise that this wasn't possible until he tried; accordingly, the sale fell apart.

Good luck to the vendor in grappling with the DVLA which, according to Facebook, is his next move!
