I had a good ratch through my tools and found a suitable pair of pliers to modify (butcher), so I set to and achieved the correct holding of the collets but I needed to shorten the nose to enable the priers to be positioned within the chest.

I set to with the disc grinder and then it happened I SLICED MY INDEX FINGER length ways through the knuckle

A quick trip to A&E where once cleaned they found I'd gone down just above the tendon but thankfully not damaged it, so lots of steri-strips and super glue and now I'm sitting here with a great big bandage over the finger.
One advantage of living in the sticks I was in and out of A&E within 45 minutes. So your quote of not to difficult to fabricate was not quite correct, but I'll get there and next time keep my finger out of the way.
