Gordon England used some pretty jazzy colour schemes on his coachbuilt cars in the late 1920's. I don't think they were metallic, they were possibly sponged with silver paint. The Wembley saloon that Earl Howe drove was finished in buff and marble blue with black wings, a colour scheme that I imagine was very attractive.
I personally don't like seeing cars that were originally black having the lower half repainted in a rather bright colour such as blue or red. Worse still the larger saloons that are painted white below the waist to make them into 'wedding cars'.
I know that if it is your car you can paint it any colour you choose. If I was looking to buy an Austin 7 I would go for one that was in its factory colour with its original number plate, unless it was something a bit special!
