I have used a 4 speed Eltos very succesfully for well over 30 years, mine uses a reverse lockout based on the ones Austin fitted to their single seat racers. I have also used several homemade variarions on the remote scheme all of which rattled but otherwise worked well enough. One of the nicest 4 speed remotes I have seeen was made by my late friend Joss Campbell, I posted pictures of it on here a few years ago.
