I refer to Malcolm's comment about plug fouling. It is generally thought to be due to plug position being directly above the edge of the piston, and with cylinder wear oil gets thrown up onto the plug. I certainly experienced this when I was hard up in the early 60s. Late heads could be found for next to nothing in scrap yards, and an engine overhaul would have deprived me of beer money, so I put up with cleaning plugs.
