Brake Cross Tube.
#1
I have no brake cross tube for my 1929 RK Saloon. Does anyone know where I might get hold of  one?  Can I just use a length of 1" tubing and if so what do the dimensions of the tube need to be?

Hi Alan

I believe 1” solid steel bar has been used in the past. Getting the correct specifications for a tube will be difficult as it is very thick walled. I suggest you get a length of bar, assemble the cross shaft without bolting in the cotters, see how long it needs to be and cut to length. You will then need to grind or file cotter grooves.

I could grovel under my cars to check the length but it’s Sunday evening. If no one comes up with the correct length I will measure it tomorrow.

Cheers

If they are the same length, I can measure a Ruby version as mine is on the bench.

Hi Jamie / Alan

Unfortunately they aren’t the same length. The pre 1930 short wheelbase brake shaft sits closer to the cross member than the long wheelbase cars and is slightly shorter.

Hi Alan and Jamie

21 5/8”

If I were you I’d buy a length of 1” bar (EN8 should be OK) slightly longer and cut to suit. As far as I can see it doesn’t matter if it’s a bit longer as it’s not going to foul anything.

Cheers

I have seen a simple, thick-walled tube used as a cross shaft held not in the original brackets but in a pair of self-aligning plumber blocks. This would form a very rigid assembly, yet one able to cope with the chassis twisting.

I think I might be able to help in your search, Alan, but I won’t be able to check until the weekend. If you are still in need then, I’ll see what I can turn up..

I believe Tony Betts of County spares used to supply these.
