Cause of backfire or popping back.
#31
Just by way of concluding an old thread...

The backfire has cured itself with no intervention from me - but I have some clue as to what the problem might have been. After the rebuild the compression was very slightly lower on number three (110,110,106,110). I didn't think this was enough of a difference to be significant but when the backfire disappeared I checked the compressions again and they were all at 110. They have remained the same since.

I'm wondering if it might have been a valve not seating, or sticking in some way but I don't understand why. As well as several local journeys I took the car to work on Tuesday (40 miles) and all seems well, so I'll not be taking it apart unless the problem returns.

Thank you again everyone for your input.
