Semi-Girling brakes and hubs
#31
Is this front or rear hubs? Rear hubs have to be assembled onto the axle. Inner half of the hub with the bearing in place and fully home goes onto the axle first. If lip seals are fitted the retaining washer for the felt is still needed as it affects the clearance of the bearing. If its reluctant to go on it can be driven on with a suitable tube. I have a large box spanner that works well. Then the lockwasher and nut go on to hold the bearing in place. Finally the outer half of the hub with the key carefully in place and finish off with the nut on the half-shaft. We have sealed bearings so no gasket is needed.
If the outer is reluctant to go fully over the bearing I put the hub puller onto the hub, screwed fully home then use a hammer on the centre bolt of the puller (having made sure the bolt is clear of the half-shaft.
Front hubs can be fully assembled on the bench then fitted over the stub axle and pulled on using the retaining nut. A thin walled socket is helpful here. If it's reluctant the hub puller can be used to drive it on as for the rear hub.
Remember to remove the lubricating plug in the front hub. It fouls on the outer bearing.

You mentioned you had to adjust the seals to fit- is it possible that the seal is too wide and stopping the bearing from seating home in the back flange (I believe called the Felt Housing).

As mentioned, the felt washer must still be used to make up the correct bearing spacing in the hub.

Cheers, Tony.

Thanks all for your advice. I think I will go the route of building each front hub and then mounting over the stub-axle before tightening the castellated nut.

I will then take Alan's advice to use a roll pin (Not a split pin) to hold the castellated nut. obviouly it would be a straight drive once all the holes arelined up. I am hoping some 25mm by 3mm ones I have aquired will do the job. Hopefully I won't have to search out some imperial size!!

That's a job for Friday - I don't have a hydraulic press but know a man who does!!!

Thanks again everyone - useful as always.
