Axle tubes
#1
Hi All

I’m putting together a long nose s/w back axle.  I’ve recently acquired the banjo and some time ago acquired two axle tubes supposedly from a single vehicle. I’ve spent quite some time getting them clean and I started to mark them out for cutting and shortening.

Notice the problem!  Yes two near side tubes!

So does anyone have a spare offside tube?  Any A7 tube (apart from the early ones without adjusters) will do, even a D shape axle. I think I can cut off the D shape part and substitute one of the old nearside halves (back to front so to speak). Unless anyone can think of a reason why this won’t work.

I intend to convert to Semi Girling backplates so even a late semi Girling axle is acceptable. On this point, at what angle do you drill the backplate bolt holes to ensure the brake lever orientation is correct?

Cheers

I've done this using appropriate parts from a mix of axles and it works fine, Howard. Of course, you have to be very careful getting it all iined up before welding. As you can see from the photo, I used a bare chassis fitted with a pair of springs to check it was all lined up. You also have to remember that the adjusters are handed so need to get them on the correct sides otherwise the scrolls will send the axle oil out of the banjo.

Hi Steve

Thanks, this gives me confidence.

I’d forgotten about the scrolls and, Sod’s Law, I have two left hand adjusters!  So if any one has an off side tube could you check it’s got an adjuster fitted please.

When working on a D type axle to straighten and strengthen I used a 5foot length of bright bar passed through the casings, with the adjusters fitted it was easy to feel which way to move it in the press.

A D type can be sacrificed in this process.
I may have a scroll lying about, having canabalised a few axles over the years.
Which side do you need?

Hi Charles

Thanks it’s an offside R adjuster….but hold fire I think I may have sourced a complete axle.

Ok. That saves me venturing into the storage shed for now.

I have some 1933/34 D type axle parts that are available in SE Cornwall.
They probably still have the scrolls in them.

Thanks Dickie

I’ll bear you in mind if things don’t go to plan with my other source.
