Chummy exhaust
#1
After a good many years/miles, our '29 chummy (AD tourer) finally needs a new silencer. It's the type that fits through holes in the chassis cross-members, with a short side-exit tail pipe just in front of the rear wheel. Can anyone advise me on the best place to get one from? I see they are listed on the Seven Workshop web site, but no pictures or dimensions, so not clear if this is suitable. Quite pricey, so I don't want to take a chance if it isn't right. It seems nobody in our local PWA7C group has any recent experience. Any thoughts/comments? Thanks!

Why not call Jamie Rogerson at the Seven Workshop and ask the dimensions?

Hi, John. First, measure the diameter and length of yours and the outside diameter of its inlet pipe. I have heard stories of the downpipe and silencer inlet pipes being the same diameter and so having to be joined by an oversleeve. The short curved outlet pipe will almost certainly have to be fabricated. It might be that your local exhaust stockist will have something and able to add an outlet pipe. I've no experience with them, but Hawleys in Sheffield might be able to help:

I've never managed to find a snap-into-place-fit-and-forget A7 silencer; all have needed modifying and mucking about with.

Tony, the inlet pipe and downpipe are the same diameter. There's a sleeve/clamp contraption joining them, but this is as-shown in the relevant Austin parts book, so likely correct. Interesting what you say about needing modification to fit. My (admittedly vague) recollection of when I helped my late father fit the existing silencer, was that we had trouble. IIRC, it would not fit between the holes in the chassis without first cutting off the tail pipe! This we reattached somehow, only for it to later part company with the car and be lost in a ditch somewhere! A "temporary bodge" has been in place for many years since. I remember my father being frustrated that such a common service item didn't simply fit straight on. I think this was all about 30 years ago though!!!

Charles, I will in due course ring Jamie and see what he says.

Hi John. You need someone who knows what they are doing and who will do a good job at a reasonable price. I highly recommend PD Gough.

Not far from you.

I've used several of the Seven Workshop SWB silencers and they have been great, no problems.

Fit with confidence!

I second what Parazine said, never had a problem with Jamie’s exhausts, long or short wheelbase.
