Schnieder Tropy, 1931 - Tony Griffiths - 27-08-2020

Low-resolution I'm afraid, but it's all I could find of this evocative cover picture.

A contrast of advanced and very conservative engineering! (or maybe not so much if it is a Lion engine)

Looks like an S5 to me so would be the Lion. S6 with the RR engine first flew in 1931 but had a V frontal aspect.

We have much to thank the Schneider Trophy planes for. I'm sure many of you, if not all, know the story, but in case not...

What a great picture !

As a young lad, I used to admire the blue and silver 1929 S6A Schneider Trophy plane that used to grace the indoor part of the entrance to the Royal Pier in Southampton.  This was the place where you boarded the Isle of Wight ferry to Cowes.

This plane is now on display at the Solent Sky museum (which is open) in Southampton , somewhere on my "to do" list for visiting.

Solent Sky is well worth a visit.
