Hi David

Looks a splendid trip.  Not even Bob could confuse the itinerary with a trip in England  Big Grin

Cheers

Hi Austin

SI is South Island. OE is overseas experience which so many young locals pursue (or did). I seem to recall he mentioned roadholding as also a factor. As a young professional and a visitor he would have had no mechanical skills and no place to work. Many Sevens still on the road here then were diabolical. Mine was not quite finished and in the other island so I shopped about for another, all at the bottom end of prices. One was so worn and/or retarded could barely reach 30mph. Several were extensively remodelled with makeshift panels, seat cushions, upholstery etc.  A good 1937 wanted L80. I passed up a very low mileage chummy for about L50 because I had nowhere to keep an open car. Struck me as very lively cf 1935 Ruby. Settled for an early Ruby with almost no rear floor intact Engine seemed reasonable but later on after about a mile at 50 developed a tremendous thud. Slow down and OK. Possibly a jet blocked but I think the screws were Araldited in.... I had  no work place or blocks and very little knowledge. As with very many others, may have been thrown by the Pitmans book wrong timing recommendation.
Cut up an apple box for s.a discs. Had to refit flywheel... When stoplights of car ahead unexpectedly blinked, the seat tore out of the floor.... A new Hillman or suchlike about L950 at the time, and a tradesmans wage about L17.

Some Notation from Mrs Jones (a VW nut)

VW Type 1 = Beetle/Bug the type dear old Ferdinand designed for the Nazi's
VW Type 2 or II = Forward Control, rear engine commercial vehicle (derived from the above)

The Split screen early series forward controls subsequently gained the notation T1, the later 'Bay Window' it got termed the T2, and the Transporter (horrid square job sometimes referred to as T25) the T3, when the front engine T4 was launched in the early 1990's.

All the forward control rear engine commercial vehicles are VW Type 2

Thank you Howard. It also gave young Leon plenty of practice in managing a four speed crash box.

VW van? Here's the one you want: a van with a bed and a sink at a bargain price: https://www.volkswagen-vans.co.uk/en/new-vehicles/california.html

The Cup has come down from its lofty height to be assembled back into one piece, but also so I can use its sky hook to fit my new roof to the roller.

We had a very nice trip to Northern Ireland via Dumfries and Galloway. Super friendly people, great roads, lovely food and plenty of Guinness. Accommodation wasn't too shabby either. The weather was mostly great but needed to improvise side screens queuing for the ferry at Larne to hide from the horizontal rain and wind last night!

You must think I'm a capitalist if you imagine I have that kind of money ;-)
The cheapest one is 7 times the price we paid for our terrace back-to-back in 1978 before that woman started her property inflation/speculation business! IIRC she also promised to build 10 new Nuclear power stations in ten years ...
