Re. the filler cap. At one MOT the test was being conducted by a young lad under the watchful eye of the usual senior chap. He removed the filler cap and checked whether it had a sealing washer, which I thought was particularly thorough. Fortunately I had previously fashioned a ring from cork sheet to fit in it. I wonder if they had them originally, and whether that would prevent breathing via the cap ? Maybe the hole where the retaining wire fits would be enough.

I forgot to mention that when I blocked the breather pipe,  I did file a little groove in the face of the brass flange that is on the top of the filler pipe. Just to be sure of a little air leakage.

A pencil fits up the breather tube nicely.

Caterham Sevens had efficient lockable petrol caps which sealed the system, resulting in fuel starvation. Caught me out several times.

Why not a third time if it’s true — block it with a piece of dowel or something non perishable and forget it.
Did that many years ago and no problems with breathing through the filler.
