so did Dixi use the later 2 seater tourer shape before Austin, seeing that is still a SWB long scuttle... ?

The sign translates, I think, as  "Not ready to go" . I wonder why.....

Is that some sort of power take off between the back wheels?

17-year-old Gordon England is mentioned in this - http://www.glidingheritage.org.uk/docume...art1v2.pdf  In 1909 it must have been one of his earliest flights - and is recorded as the world's first soaring flight i.e. staying aloft by using rising air. No wonder the bodywork of his cars was aviation-inspired.

They're putting a lot of faith in those little stools with the spindly legs!   What is the bucket for under the middle of the car?  All very odd.

Basically, yes, Jon. The example in Robert's photo looks to be a circa 1928 Dixi, but here's a collection of BMWs from 1930 with the same basic body shape:

The sign will almost certainly be from a glider. It's a typical thing to find on a plane that is being worked on and in case somebody tries to fly it with some inconspicuous but vital part missing.

Mike is quite right an early Dixi using an Austin type cowl and bonnet. 
  I quite like the idea of the 'boys' returning from the Oktoberfest decided to have a bit of fun.
