Oil for running in
#1
I am still putting together my engine (a stripped head stud is holding me up while I wait for a helicoil kit to arrive) but I was looking about for a good, cheap oil to use for putting in the engine to run it in. I have good Penrite classic/vintage oil to use as my every day oil but for running in want something I can use and change quickly so it seems pointless to waste the good stuff.

The local parts place had this oil on special: https://www.repco.co.nz/en/brands/repco/...p/A1249731

I think it was only $20 for 5 litres. Probably all gone now but if there is still some about is it suitable as a breaking in oil?

Oh well, we had half a day off today so I went for a drive to see if they still had the oil. Not anymore of course. Now all they have on special is this one: https://www.repco.co.nz/en/brands/gv-10-...p/A1234571

Definitely looks budget! 15W-40 API SW/CF apparently.

Always happens when you see something on special and think maybe I should get some.... If you don't, by the time you go back it's gone!

Hi Simon,
Running in oil is available from Penrite . I used it in my Top Hat when I first rebuilt the engine.
I have just checked in the catalogue.
Product code: RUN005  premium mineral Running In Oil    15W- 40  5 litres    - non friction modified. has high  zinc to protect from wear during run in. You may need to order in.

Ring manufacturers recommend first change, even with filter,  at very low mileage, 100 or so. So pour some used MG oil through a filter and use that!
