There are estimated to be 15 million rats in the UK.  Using a similar calculation, this gives an average of 150 rats per sq mile, or 1500 per sq mile in urban areas (if most are in the towns and cities). At 1500 per sq mile, this is one every 2000 sq yds, so on average you're never more than about 25 yards from a rat. (As this does not take account of where they find it best to hide, 6ft might be more accurate in some places.)

Of course, it may be different in France...

Don’t know about rats but apart from my lot there’s eight sevens within 10 minutes walk of my house
