Thank you Peter and Malcolm for your suggestion. I will, of course check. However, you will see in my original post that this noise is a distinct light tapping noise that occurs between drive and overrun, exactly when one would expect a big or little end rattle to occur.

Between drive and overrun is when problems in transmission such as prop shaft occur.

If it is the gearbox -4speed?? My guess would be excess endfloat in the layshaft bearings.

Yes, Alan it is. It's the crash type 4 speed box.
