Alternative engines - what's been tried?

ODGIE did build a CX500 powered car. I just realised it's pronounced "odd guy" , pictured here but heaps of detail on the old forum.

there was also an electric drive discussed on this forum some time ago.

 Renault 750 was introduced into the 750 formula here in OZ in the sixtys to preserve A7 components and Athol Lamont put one in his chummy.  I remember it threw a fan blade about the time we were admiring the installation.  
Warren Bonning never one to shy away from a challenge produced a Suzuki powered ruby roadster for sale in the lightshaft about 2 years ago.  cheers Russell

I looked at a Kubota 3 cylinder diesel. Would have fitted in easy. Power and engine speed were similar to the seven. Never did it though!

Right, that's sparked me up! I do have a CX engine lurking, actually I had 27 of them at one point, but that's a whole different story! Split dive shaft and a reversing gearbox from Nova and up and running!

Yes Alan, you mean the 4 cyl engine that powered the Sandford and D'Yrsan French three wheelers presumably? Actually, if you take a look at a D'Yrsan and kind of squint...I could see a special Austin Seven front end three wheeler with an Ulster body on it....this is why I want an old grp Ulster body to chop up and modify. Just one of the things I need to do before being carted away!

Sandfords are magnificent machines.

Interesting that the A-series car has a small bore A-series bellhousing mated to a pre-war Morris gearbox from the 8. I believe that Morris had to do the same conversion with the development Series 2 Minors since the Austin 803 gearbox was so unreliable.

Just finished the new Adrian Newey book. His road car project has an electric motor to use as a starter, reverse, power generation, for stealth mode in town and "hybrid", in particular to get it rolling given the size and weight of the clutch and lack of flywheel weight. Reminded me of prewar "dynastarts". Google threw up some modern ones, some for boats, and reminded me they were a microcar thing. (Also enjoyed the Lawrie Bond book recently).

I think that would be quite amusing, Alan. We could sit back and watch the shock, horrors and then tell them that you should never jump to conclusions.
