What is the safe maximum output for a standard dynamo operating at 6 volts? i want to convert to a 2 brush dynamo but want to limit the current as to not damage the dynamo.

Armature current is the basic limitation. Normally, this is directly related to output as shown by the ammeter. Opinions differ as to the exact limit  but car originally somewhat exceeded total running and lamp load... with just 18w bulbs! Corresponds about 10amp on ammeter lights off (35M). Assumes coil current as original. The field originally operated on about 5v max ; dont know how survive on full 6v.The field current is not included in ammeter and any increase adds to armature load. 2 brush operation requires some form of regulator and at full output must ensure armature current not excessive.
Dunno what your aim is but the original system works with original lamp load, and with more if not going for hours at night.
