Tried some older suppressed tops on today and didn't make a difference. Noticed I have THREE PIN flasher relay and I think the third pin may be just to earth rather than to a warning light and then earth. Could that possibly throw anything out?

Is your relay marked  "L" , "B" , "P".  ie, Load, Battery, Pilot/ warning light.

I'm not sure - it was dark up under there! I'll have to check next time I go.
But are there any other 3 pin indicator relays?
