Campbell Austin
#1
Some years ago I downloaded an image. It was of cars lining up at the start of a sports car race at Watkins Glen? in 1940 or 41. I cropped out the Campbell car but now can't find the original un-cropped image.
Can anyone confirm the driver, date etc?

Searching online this morning for the complete image proved unsuccessful, however this turned up on the New York Historical Society site

The same car, early 1930. Alf Depper at the wheel.
At this time it was orange with an inclined white radiator shell and seems to have been known as the Waite single seater?
When it went to Daytona beach in 1931 with Malcolm Campbell it had been fitted with a 'production' radiator shell and repainted in the Campbell Bugatti/Bluebird blue.

I wonder why the wheel centres were drilled for the record attempt.

I think all the works team car wheels were eventually centre drilled.

Yes, that's how it seems. Perhaps something to do with storage or transport?

David Howe has suggested that the 'Works' wheels were drilled so that when spare wheels were stacked for transit a rod could be passed through the centres to stop the the stack falling over; a simple solution to the problem.
