There are some advantages to having an older car, blind splines were not fitted until 1928/29 (I think), so the whole process is much easier on early models.

Many thanks to everyone who replied. I have a four speed box. I liked the long stud solution but also for me the pieces of cardboard wedging the arms into place seems a great solution. Engine and gearbox now back in the car but now have sticking valve problem. C'est la vie
